A 14-year-old system with a $900 quote is $12,600: replace. It is a quick mental check, not a law, and in Central Texas it reads low. It is not a state rule or an industry standard. It is a consumer-facing benchmark promoted by manufacturers, including Carrier’s own replacement guidance, which is worth knowing given who benefits when the answer comes out replace. It is still a useful sanity check, and deliberately crude. Two things make it read low here specifically.
### Texas is the worst climate in America for AC lifespan, and the DOE says so
The [Department of Energy publishes expected residential central AC lifespan by climate zone](https://www.energy.gov/cmei/femp/purchasing-energy-efficient-residential-central-air-conditioners), and the hot-humid Southeast zone, which explicitly includes Texas, comes out lowest in the country: 18 years, against 24 in northern states and 25 in the hot-dry Southwest. So when you run the rule, weigh the age input against an 18-year expectation rather than the 20-plus a national article assumes. The license check is not a formality, it is your only recourse
Texas provides complaint resolution only for work performed by licensed contractors; hire unlicensed and there is no administrative route, only civil court at your own expense. If you are defrauded, the paths are a complaint to TDLR or the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.
